Reading
“Reading for pleasure is the single most important indicator of a child’s future success.”
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), 2022.
- In Year 6, reading regularly and widely is crucial in order to develop the necessary fluency and stamina.
- Research highlights three powerful ways to nurture a love of reading at home:
-
- Book chats – talk about what you are reading.
- Family reading time – everyone reading together.
- Reading aloud – this still matters, even in Year
A supporting guide is available in the homework tab.
Book Recommendations
A fantastic place to discover new and exciting texts is the Open University Reading for Pleasure website. Each month, a guest recommends three books, helping you stay up to date with high-quality children’s literature. You can also explore award winners and shortlists together.

Maths
Times Tables
- Use your TT Rockstars account regularly to practise your timetables.
- You can also use your yellow homework book for additional practice.
- You can generate the same style worksheets we use in school here:
http://www.timestables.me.uk/
MyMaths
- Weekly activities will be set for revision or to consolidate current learning.
- To promote steady effort and strong learning habits, certificates will be awarded at the end of each half term to pupils who have completed assigned homework consistently.
Spellings
- Practise weekly spellings in your yellow homework book. Spellings are uploaded every Friday and a selection will be tested the following Thursday. These are linked to the spelling rules and patterns we are learning in class.
- You will also find the Year 5/6 statutory spellings broken down by week on the homework sheet. Although these are not tested weekly, these will be assessed at the end of each half term. It is important that you are learning these at home as well.
If you are unsure about anything, or if you need any support please get in touch.
Kind regards,
Mrs Smith
