Homework Autumn A
Hello Year 6,
Welcome to an important and exciting year. Now that you are in Year 6, the expectation is that you complete 2½ hours of homework each week. This should include:

Daily reading (5 times per week)

Regular practice of weekly spellings

Regular maths practice, including Times Tables Rock Stars and Maths Whizz

Takeaway homework projects

Optional additional CGP pages
CGP Books
Starting in the autumn term, children may complete the following weekly activities using the CGP book appropriate to their year group:
- Maths: KS2 Year 6 Maths 10-Minute Weekly Workouts - 1 workout per week
- Reading: KS2 English Targeted Question Book: Year 6 Reading Comprehension (Book 1 & Book 2 Bundle) - 1 comprehension activity per week
- SPAG: KS2 English Year 6 Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling Targeted Question Book (with Answers) - 1 objective per week e.g. nouns/adjectives/verbs
Reading
“Reading for pleasure is the single most important indicator of a child’s future success.” — Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), 2022.
The will to read influences the skill — and the skill strengthens the will. In Year 6, reading regularly and widely is crucial in order to develop the necessary fluency and stamina.
Research highlights three powerful ways to nurture a love of reading at home:
- Book chats – talk about what you are reading.
- Family reading time – everyone reading together.
- Reading aloud – this still matters, even in Year 6.

Book Recommendations
A fantastic place to discover new and exciting texts is the Open University Reading for Pleasure website. Each month, a guest recommends three books, helping you stay up to date with high-quality children’s literature. You can also explore award winners and shortlists together.

Maths
Times Tables: Use your TT Rock Stars account regularly to practise your times tables. You should also use your yellow homework book for additional practice.

Maths-Whizz: Home Challenge
Try to:
🔴 Earn 3 red retention gems each week. Every week replay 3 lessons you have already completed to earn your retention gems and try to beat your best score!
🔵Then have a go at getting another blue gem if you can!
You don't need to do loads in one go — short, regular sessions are best. Take your time, do your best and don't worry if you come across something tricky. Maths-Whizz is there to help you learn!
By learning 3 blue progression gems (in school) and 3 red retention gems per week you'll make it into the hall of fame and get a Maths Whizz certificate.
Spellings
Practise the weekly spellings, which are linked to the spelling rules and patterns we are learning in class, in your yellow homework book. These will be set and uploaded to the homework page on a Thursday and assessed the following Friday.
You will also find the Year 5/6 statutory spellings broken down by week on the 'Y6 Autumn A Homework Tasks' sheet. Although these are not tested weekly, they will be assessed at the end of each half term. It is important that you are learning these at home as well.
