Week Beginning 8thOctober 2018

Thank you to everyone for their Harvest gifts. I hope those of you who attend the harvest service were moved by it’s message.  Thank you also to everyone who turned out for Cross Country event at the High School. The children’s daily five- minute run is certainly paying off.

There is still an unnamed blazer in the classroom. If it belongs to you please let me know.

InEnglishwe are continuing to use the text Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge. This week we will focusing on the character if Miss Nancy

You can find out more about the author here. https://memfox.com

InMathematicswe are moving onto Addition and Subtraction. In Y2 children are expected to

  • solve problems with addition and subtraction:
    • using concrete objects and pictorial representations, including those involving numbers, quantities and measures
    • applying their increasing knowledge of mental and written methods
  • recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100
  • add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including:
    • two-digit number and ones
    • two-digit number and tens
    • two two-digit numbers
    • adding three one-digit numbers
  • show that addition of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and subtraction of one number from another cannot
  • recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems.

As part of our daily maths fluency sessions we have started learning times tables. We love using Numberjacks Times Tables Songs

Here is another song for the ten times table recommended by Y3

Our handwriting focus is on the following letters – ascender group of letters f g j p q y

In phonics/spellingt he focus is Homophones, using a GPC (grapheme phoneme correspondence) chart and other strategies for learning tricky words. We are also revising the long vowel phonemes ‘u’ and learning the different grapheme that can be used to make this sound.

In RE the unit of work is called Good News. The key questions of the unit are - How does the bible show Jesus living his life as good news to people? How do you know when you feel better? On the outside? On the inside. Last week Katie Everton, a former pupil and now a Doctor visited Y2 to talk about how she helps people.

Y2 PE days are Thursday and Friday mornings with Mr Dooley.

Y2 Reading Books
Y2 are welcome to change their reading book daily but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book at home with you.

Miss Porter will check reading books on a Monday and I will do so on a Friday.

Miss Porter and I will each half term continue to assess all the children’s reading using our benchmarking system. Please bear with us as it does take time but is a thorough assessment of the level the children are reading at. We will also check phonic and word recognition skills on a regular basis.

Homework
Takeaway homework sharing day is Wednesday 24th October. Remember to try and bring in a photo of your 101 Challenges for Miss Cork’s corridor display. Tweet to @bunburyace using #bunburys101challenges.
